Sodium Chloride – Le Guérandais Guérande Salt

Electrolytes Plus+ contains Le Guérande sea salt, renowned for its pure sea salt providing the electrolytes sodium and chloride. Le Guérande sea salt is hand-harvested and 100% natural and unrefined without any additives. Le Guérandais Guérande Salt is currently the only French sea salt awarded the Label Rouge designation, an official symbol of superior quality monitored by an independent certification body approved by the French Ministry of Agriculture. Traceability is an important part of monitoring Le Guérande sea salt.

Sodium (Na+)

Electrolytes Plus+ contains sodium from Le Guérande sea salt.

• Fluid balance: Sodium helps regulate the body's fluid balance by controlling the amount of water inside and outside the cells. This contributes to maintaining normal blood pressure and fluid levels.
• Nerve impulses: Sodium ions are crucial for creating and transmitting nerve impulses. When a nerve impulse is sent, sodium flows into the cell, creating an action potential, which is the electrical signal that allows nerve cells to communicate with each other and with muscles.
• Muscle contraction: Sodium is also necessary for muscles to function properly. During muscle contractions, from moving a finger to walking or running, sodium ions are involved in creating the electrical signal that triggers muscle movement.

Chloride (Cl-)

Electrolytes Plus+ contains chloride from Le Guérande sea salt.

• Acid-base balance: Chloride is a crucial component of hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stomach, which helps break down food and absorb nutrients. It plays a role in maintaining the body's acid-base balance by acting as a buffer to neutralize excess acidic or basic substances in the body.
• Fluid balance: Chloride works together with sodium to regulate fluid balance. By controlling the amount of sodium and chloride in the body, cells can maintain the right amount of water to function properly.
• Nerve function: Chloride ions also help regulate nerve function by being involved in creating the electrical gradient across cell membranes. This is necessary for nerve cells to send and receive signals.

Potassium (K+)

Electrolytes Plus+ contains high-quality potassium. Potassium is an important mineral that contributes to normal nervous system function, normal muscle function, and maintaining normal blood pressure.

• Muscle contraction and nerve function: Potassium is a key electrolyte for maintaining normal muscle and nerve function. It is especially important for the heart muscle, where it helps regulate the heart's rhythm and contractions.
• Fluid balance: Potassium works with sodium to regulate fluid balance and blood pressure in the body. It helps control the amount of fluid inside and outside cells.
• Acid-base balance: Potassium is also important for maintaining the body's acid-base balance by helping regulate pH levels.

Magnesium (Mg2+)

Electrolytes Plus+ contains easily absorbed, high-quality magnesium, free from buffered or hidden magnesium oxide. Magnesium is not only important for electrolyte balance. Magnesium also contributes to maintaining normal teeth, normal bone structure, and normal protein synthesis. Additionally, magnesium helps reduce tiredness and fatigue, contributes to normal energy metabolism, normal nervous system function, normal muscle function, and plays a role in the cell division process.

• Muscle and nerve function: Magnesium is crucial for normal muscle and nerve function. It is involved in over 600 biochemical reactions in the body, including muscle contractions and nerve impulses. Magnesium helps muscles relax after contraction, which is crucial for preventing cramps.
• Energy production: Magnesium is necessary for converting food into energy. It is part of the process where cells break down carbohydrates and fats to create ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the body's primary source of energy.
• Bone health: Magnesium is an important component of bone structure. It helps regulate the activity of the parathyroid hormone (PTH), which is responsible for maintaining calcium balance in the body. This is important for promoting strong bones.

Why Not Calcium (Ca2+), Phosphate (PO43-), and Bicarbonate (HCO3-)

Calcium (Ca2+)

We have chosen not to include calcium in Electrolytes Plus+ to avoid the risk of excess calcium. Not everyone needs extra calcium, and getting too much calcium can be harmful, leading to over-calcification of tissues, blood vessels, and organs. If you are deficient in calcium, it is better to take a pure calcium supplement that contains more calcium than an electrolyte supplement would provide. Including calcium in Electrolytes Plus+ could therefore be unnecessary for many users. Electrolytes Plus+ contains electrolytes such as magnesium and potassium, which many people are often deficient in.

Phosphate (PO43-)

Phosphorus deficiency is extremely rare because phosphorus is found in many foods and is a common ingredient in our diet. Conversely, it is actually more common for people to get too much phosphorus than too little. This is because many processed foods, soft drinks, and supplements contain phosphoric acid. High levels of phosphorus in the body, especially in relation to calcium, can be harmful to bone health and can contribute to health problems like osteoporosis in the long term. The goal of Electrolytes Plus+ is to focus on replenishing the electrolytes typically lost through sweating and exercise, such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium, without risking providing too much of other nutrients that are already abundant in the diet.

Bicarbonate (HCO3-)

Bicarbonate (HCO3-) can potentially disrupt the balance between magnesium and potassium in the body due to its ability to affect pH value. When bicarbonate is consumed, especially in large amounts, it can lead to an increase in blood pH levels, creating a more alkaline environment. Research shows that changes in pH value can affect how electrolytes like magnesium and potassium are absorbed and excreted by the body. Increased alkalinity can affect the distribution and balance of these electrolytes. A shift in pH value towards a more alkaline level can affect how magnesium and potassium function and are absorbed in the body. When the pH value becomes too high (alkalosis), it can affect the function of ion channels in cells, which in turn can affect how magnesium and potassium are transported in and out of cells. This can disrupt the normal function of muscles and nerves and affect fluid balance. By avoiding the inclusion of bicarbonate in the electrolyte blend, the risk of creating an imbalance between magnesium and potassium is reduced. Research also shows that alkalosis, caused by increased bicarbonate intake, can negatively affect muscle and nerve function.
