Alpha-lipoic acid, also known as thioctic acid, is a biological antioxidant that is easily absorbed and rapidly converted into its reduced form within the body's tissues. This uniqueness stems from its ability to exhibit antioxidant properties in both water-soluble and fat-soluble environments. Alpha-lipoic acid plays a role in preventing the glycosylation of proteins and inhibits the enzyme aldose reductase, thus preventing the conversion of glucose and galactose into sorbitol. The accumulation of sorbitol in the lenses of the eyes is a contributing factor to eye problems.
