Emodin is a natural compound in the anthraquinone group found in some plants like rhubarb and several other medicinal herbs. While it has various pharmacological effects, it can be toxic to the liver and kidneys in large quantities. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that products are free from emodin when used as dietary supplements or in food. PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) are a group of chemical compounds formed when organic material, such as wood or fossil fuels, burns incompletely. Some PAHs are known to be extremely harmful and can cause health issues if accumulated in the body over time. Thus, it is vital to ensure that products are not contaminated with PAHs, especially in food or supplement manufacturing.

The issue with PAHs in resveratrol is that a large amount of resveratrol sold on the market today comes from countries where extraction from Japanese knotweed (also known as Polygonum sp.) is not done properly. Given the origin of resveratrol, which is extracted from Polygonum, there is a significant risk that these products may be contaminated with PAHs. Wood burning and other bioenergy solutions contribute to more than half of the annual global PAH emissions, a particular issue in some Asian countries. Food is the major source of exposure. Isn’t drinking red wine enough?

Although wine, particularly red wine, contains resveratrol, it is not enough to drink wine to gain the potential health benefits of this powerful antioxidant. To get sufficient amounts of resveratrol, you would need to consume a very large amount of wine daily. Red wine contains an average of about 12.6 mg of resveratrol per liter. That means you would need to drink almost twelve liters of wine to ingest 150 mg of resveratrol. Consuming such large quantities of wine is neither sustainable nor healthy, as it can negatively impact the liver, raise insulin levels, and cause other negative health effects, such as alcohol-related problems.
