All about Q10?

What is Q10?

Q10, also known as Coenzyme Q10 or ubiquinone, is a fat-soluble substance naturally present in all the cells of the body. It plays a crucial role in energy production within cells by participating in the electron transport chain in the mitochondria, which is essential for ATP production. Q10 also acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting cell membranes, lipids, and proteins from oxidative damage.

Is Q10 a vitamin?

Q10 is not classified as a vitamin because the body can produce it naturally, unlike vitamins that must be obtained through the diet. Instead, Q10 is a coenzyme, meaning it assists enzymes in catalyzing biochemical reactions. Unfortunately, the production of Q10 declines with age, and supplements of Q10 are an excellent way to maintain high levels of this important coenzyme.

What are the benefits of Q10?

Q10 offers a range of health benefits due to its role in energy production and antioxidant activity. Here are some areas where Q10 has proven to be beneficial:

Q10 for wrinkles and aging

Research has shown that Q10 can improve skin health and reduce signs of aging. As an antioxidant, Q10 protects the skin from oxidative stress and UV damage, which are two major factors contributing to skin aging. (Puizina-Ivić N. Acta Dermatovenerol Alp Pannonica Adriat. 2008 Jun;17(2):47-54.) Anti-aging and Q10 is an interesting topic with more information available here.

Q10 during pregnancy

During pregnancy, the body’s need for energy and antioxidants increases. Q10 can play an important role in supporting both maternal and fetal health by aiding energy production and protecting against oxidative stress. A study published in the "American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology" found that Q10 supplementation may reduce complications during pregnancy. (Teran et al. Coenzyme Q10 supplementation. Int J Gynaecol Obstet. 2009 Apr;105(1):43-5.) Learn more about how Q10 may impact preeclampsia here.

Q10 and fertility

Q10 has been shown to improve fertility in both men and women. In men, Q10 can enhance sperm quality by improving sperm motility and protecting them from oxidative damage. A study in the "Journal of Urology" found that Q10 supplementation improved sperm motility and increased pregnancy rates in couples with fertility issues (Balercia et al. Coenzyme Q10 treatment. Fertil S. 2009 May;91(5):1785-92).

Q10’s impact on stress

Q10 may also positively impact stress by boosting energy levels and reducing fatigue. A study published in "N.chemical Research" found that Q10 can reduce oxidative stress and improve mitochondrial function, which may lead to decreased mental and physical fatigue (Lee et al. Coenzyme Q10 supplementation. Nutrition. 2012 Mar;28(3):250-5).

Can Q10 cause side effects?

In general, Q10 supplements are well tolerated by most people. Common side effects are mild and may include minor gastrointestinal discomfort.
